Artist Statement-

Ella Tout is a multimedia artist who works primarily with experimental animation and sculpture to explore emotions and how the world is perceived through their eyes.

As a part of her practice Ella uses ‘The Sack’ as an alter- ego to embody and vocalise thoughts and feelings that are not otherwise easily conveyed. The character of the Sack plays the narrative of an un-human-like character who is learning about the world, and what it is to be human. Sack is also an embodiment for Ella’s view of the world.

To make her work, Ella explores different materials and processes to create her work. This way of working helps her find context in her work. She employs labour-intensive processes, such as hand embroidery and lino to create stop-frame animations. These time consuming processes allow Ella to slow down and consider the feeling and context of her work, whether it be stitching into fabric or craving lino. The sounds Ella uses in her animations is used to further anthropomorphise Sack and set the scene of the environment she is trying to convey.

Ella is interested in work that explores the nuances and diversity of the human condition. Her practice is influenced by the artist Len Lye for his approach to early experimental animation, and Tony Oursler for his personification of objects with projection.
